Nepal Advances to SAFF Women's Championship Final, Ready to Face Bangladesh
Nepal Enters Final of SAFF Women's Championship in a Thrilling Victory over India.
In a nail-biting semi-final at the Dasharath Stadium on Friday, Nepal's women's football team managed to ensure their spot in the final of the SAFF Women's Championship after a pulsating 1-1 draw against India that was settled through a penalty shootout.
Nepal clinched the
victory 4-2, with penalty kicks sealing their journey into the final. The match was, in fact, replete with
intensity from the word go to the last; in one of those moments of shock, a red
card was given in the early part of the second half to Nepal's leading scorer,
Rekha Paudel. Having scored seven goals, Paudel had been instrumental in
Nepal's progress in this championship. Her sudden exit left Nepal down to ten
players. That red card brought a wave of frenzy from the stands, as play was
stalled for some time. Another star of the team, Sabitra Bhandari, took matters
into her hands and spoke to the crowd, appealing for calm and to support the
team.
Following the early
lead by India, Nepal did not waste much time in drawing level after the game
resumed. A timely goal by Sabitra Bhandari brought the scores even and kept the
Nepali hopes alive for the penalty shootout drama to unfold.
